Diljit Dosanjh's Cites Rahat Indori's Poerty Amid Bajrang Dal Protests: 'Kisi Ke Baap Ka Hindustan Thodi Hai'
Diljit Dosanjh's concert in Indore served as a tribute to Urdu poet Rahat Indori, promoting unity despite protests from the Bajrang Dal regarding his past remarks. The event highlighted cultural sensitivity with adjustments made for safety.

In a recent concert in Indore, Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh made a poignant dedication to the late Urdu poet Rahat Indori. He recited one of Indori's ghazals, emphasizing the message that Hindustan belongs to no single person. This statement was particularly significant given the context protests by the Bajrang Dal against his concert. The group had raised concerns over Dosanjh's previous comments during the farmers' protests and alleged support for Khalistan, demanding the event's cancellation.
The concert, part of Diljit Dosanjh's Dil-Luminati India tour, took place amidst controversy stirred by the Bajrang Dal's approach to the Indore police. The group's actions were rooted in accusations against Dosanjh for making anti-national remarks and supporting Khalistan, claims he has faced due to his outspoken support during the farmers' protests. Avinash Kaushal, a Bajrang Dal leader, was quoted saying, "Diljit has made anti-national remarks several times during the farmers' protest. He is also a supporter of Khalistan. We will not allow such a person to hold an event in the city of Maa Ahilya."
Despite the Bajrang Dal's protests, the concert went ahead, albeit with significant adjustments: no meat or alcohol was served. This decision was in response to another aspect of the Bajrang Dal's protest, focusing on the consumption of drugs and alcohol at such events. Tannu Sharma, another leader from the group, clarified, "Our protest was against the consumption of drugs. We are not against this concert. It's not in our culture to consume drugs in these concerts; we are against that. We are also against the consumption of alcohol and there were such stalls in this concert."
The local police took the concerns raised seriously, particularly regarding law and order, women's security, and drug abuse. The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Zone 2 highlighted their approach, saying, "Indore police consider the matter of law and order situation, women's security and drug abuse seriously. We have not permitted serving alcohol and its consumption in the open here. We are taking everything into cognizance."
Diljit's choice to highlight Rahat Indori's poetry at his concert was a bold move, especially considering the backdrop of the Bajrang Dal's protests. Indori's ghazal, "Agar khilaaf hain hone do, Jaan thodi hai. Ye sab dhua hai asmaan thodi hai. sabhi ka khoon hai shaamil yahan ki mitti mein/ kisi ke baap ka Hindustan thodi hai (If they oppose, let them, it's not life at stake. This is just smoke, not the sky at stake. This land has seen sacrifices from everyone/ Hindustan is not anyone's property)," resonates with the idea of unity and collective ownership of the country, a fitting tribute in a city that Indori called home.
The Indore concert of Diljit Dosanjh, therefore, became more than just a musical event. It turned into a platform for emphasizing unity, peace, and the collective spirit of India, even amid controversy and protests. The actions taken by the authorities and the adjustments made to the concert's offerings reflect a broader conversation about culture, security, and community values in contemporary India.
