Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: How Gruesome Patriarchal Violence To Woman’s Body Shakes The Core Of Humanity

Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case A Note From Author

Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Have we ever given it much of a thought that the next victim could be us? Chilling, right? Perhaps, the 31-years-old trainee doctor has never thought either when the Nirbhaya case happened in Delhi 12 years ago that one day the entire nation will be demanding justice for her? Perhaps, she cracked one of the toughest exams in the country with the dream of getting nationwide fame, but she had never thought she would end up getting the limelight for all the wrong reasons when she would be gone? Perhaps, she wanted to participate in the rallies and protests for Nirbhaya, but her family or tight schedule didn't allow her? Perhaps, she wanted to change the system and raise voice against chauvinism, but she was warned not to? Perhaps.....

It took a brutal gang-rape and merciless killing at the RG Kar hospital in Kolkata to unite lakhs of women 'at the stroke of midnight, when the world sleeps' on August 15, Independence Day. But how did it take so long? Why did we have to wait for another incident to happen? What have we learned from The Nirbhaya Case? Well, we as collective society have learned nothing, we haven't implemented anything, we haven't taken any safety measures, and we haven't begun the charity at our own home!

Our home and workplaces should be the haven for us and women can't feel safe even in there? Let alone the public transport and large gatherings, every woman has some way or the other has a bitter experience that I don't want to get started with in the first place. Had we been safe at our home, minors wouldn't have been molested by family members! Had we been safe at our workplaces, the entire RG Kar case wouldn't have taken place either. But what causes this, have we ever wondered? Is it only on the men? Well, women also feed themselves the patriarchal age-old norms from a very tender age and try to blend themselves in it that eventually encourages chauvinism in the society.

However, it was indeed a moving fact how the brutality on a young woman has blurred the border as people demand for justice. From Pakistan to New York City, people have joined the protest and showed their solidarity. Not only women, even men and transgenders have joined the protest to show, there is still hope for improvement.
