Renowned Bengali actress Uma Dasgupta, who garnered worldwide fame for playing young Durga in Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali, passed away at the age of 70. She played the role of the sister of Apu, a young boy, on whom the the the iconic trilogy is based on. Her trailblazing role remains as relevant and powerful even in today's era. She breathed her last at 8.15 am in Kolkata.

Uma Dasgupta played the role of Durga, an adolescent girl, born and brought up in an underpriviledged family in rural bengal. Her character in the film showcases the day to day struggle of a young girl raised in a poor family. The emotional growth and maturity of her younger brother is also shown in the film beautifully with respect to her character development. For the unversed, the film has garnered the worldwide critical acclaim to Satyajit Ray, who later won an Oscar for his exceptional vision for the film, released in 1955.

According to Ei Samay Online, the death news of the actress is first shared by Bengali actor Chinranjit Chakraborty. The report further states, the actress was admitted to the hospital owing to age-related illness and passed away at the wee hours in the morning. The actor further revealed that the devastating news was confirmed by her daughter. The actor has expressed his condolences to the family after her passing.
