GOAT Tour: Lionel Messi Forced Exit Early Due To Chaos; Upset Fans Vandalise Banners, Throw Bottles

The GOAT Tour India 2025 in Kolkata faced disruption as spectators hurled objects during a prematurely curtailed lap of honour, prompting security actions. A separate event celebrated Messi with a 70-foot iron statue, underscoring strong Indian fan engagement despite security concerns around large gatherings.

Chaos and celebration collided at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium as Lionel Messi’s GOAT Tour India 2025 appearance ended early, with the football star forced to abandon a planned lap of honour after frustrated spectators hurled bottles and other objects when they failed to see Messi clearly from the stands.

The Argentine World Cup winner, on the first visit to India since 2011, had arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning to huge crowds across major routes. Supporters lined roads and gathered near key locations, reflecting Messi’s strong following in West Bengal and the wider country, despite tight security arrangements.

Inside Salt Lake Stadium, the mood shifted as sections of the crowd reacted angrily when Messi left earlier than expected. Some fans vandalised seats and tore banners, while others booed officials and politicians present, underlining serious security and crowd-control issues during the high-profile GOAT Tour India 2025 event in the city.

The lap of honour, planned as a highlight for thousands of ticket-holders, ended abruptly once bottles and other items started landing near the pitch. Security staff moved quickly to escort Messi away. Many spectators who had waited for hours complained they never managed even a brief glimpse of the Argentina captain.

Lionel Messi India tribute statue unveiled in Kolkata

Earlier in the day, away from the stadium unrest, Kolkata hosted a major tribute to Messi’s global impact. At Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town, South Dum Dum, Messi virtually unveiled an iron statue standing 70 feet tall, showing the star holding the FIFA World Cup trophy aloft.

The structure, completed in 40 days, was designed as a celebration of Messi’s international achievements and deep bond with Indian supporters. West Bengal Minister and Sree Bhumi Sporting Club President Sujit Bose said, "We have talked to his manager, and today we will talk to Messi... He gave his consent for the statue and they are also happy..." Bose added that Messi and the entourage welcomed the tribute.
