Maha Shivratri usually falls on the 14th day of the first half of the lunar month of Phalguna. This year, Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on February 26, 2025. Coming to the puja timing, Chaturdashi tithi will begin at 11:08 am on February 26, and it will end on 8:54 am on February 27. The Mahashivratri jagran will take place on the night of February 26, 2025.

  • First prahar puja time- 6:19 pm-9:26 pm, February 26
  • Second prahar puja time- 9:26 pm-12:34 am, February 27

There are also two important timings that devotees often look for-

  • Nishitha Kal puja time- 12:09 am-12:59 am, February 27

Maha Shivratri Significance & Rituals

Maha Shivratri is celebrated among Shiva devotees to celebrate his wedding with Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that on the same day, Shiva performed his cosmic dance that signify creation, preservation, and destruction at the same time.

Devotees adhere to fasting rules like no consumption of food or water for the entire day and night. They visit temple and offer Shiva linga milk, honey, ghee, curd, sweet, bael leaves, bhaang, sweets, which are considered to be Shiva's favorite among other things.

Maha Shivratri is considered as a public holiday in several states and all the government and public institutions remain closed on the day. On the the other hand, RBI has declared a bank holiday in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh for February 26.
