Anoushka Shankar, Gorillaz Perform ‘Moon Cave’ From Latest Album Release ‘The Mountain’ On Saturday Night LIVE
Anoushka Shankar performs Moon Cave with Gorillaz on SNL, showcasing a sitar-led element from The Mountain. The collaboration features multiple international guests and underscores cross cultural musical exchange central to the album.
Sitarist Anoushka Shankar performed “Moon Cave” with Gorillaz on Saturday Night Live, showcasing a key track from the new album “The Mountain”. The appearance followed the album’s release and highlighted Shankar’s sitar-led partnership with the band on one of television’s most watched music stages.

The performance featured visuals by AKHL Studio, with Anoushka Shankar taking musical lead beside Gorillaz on stage. The set centred on “Moon Cave”, bringing the sound of the album to a live broadcast audience.
Anoushka Shankar Gorillaz The Mountain album collaboration
“The Mountain” contained 15 tracks, and Anoushka Shankar featured on seven of them. Shankar added sitar to “The Mountain”, “Moon Cave”, “Orange County”, “The Empty Dream Machine”, “The Plastic Guru”, “The Sweet Prince” and “The Sad God”. These songs underlined Shankar’s central role in shaping the album’s sound.
The Gorillaz album also brought together a large group of collaborators from India and abroad. Anoushka Shankar shared space with Asha Bhosle, Asha Puthli, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash. International guests included Bizarrap, Kara Jackson, Paul Simonon, Johnny Marr, Black Thought and others.
The project linked two different Indian generations in one release. It paired Asha Bhosle, an iconic playback legend, with Anoushka Shankar, one of the most visible global artists of the present. Their appearances underlined the album’s mix of tradition, experimentation and shared artistic ground.
Anoushka Shankar Gorillaz The Mountain and global platforms
Appearing on Saturday Night Live placed Anoushka Shankar among a small group of South Asian figures tied to the show. Aziz Ansari became the first South Asian host of Saturday Night Live. Nimesh Patel followed in 2017 as the first Indian-American writer hired on SNL.
With Anoushka Shankar performing on Saturday Night Live, many observers saw another step for South Asian visibility on a major global stage. Her set with Gorillaz added a classical Indian instrument to a programme usually led by Western pop and rock acts.
Earlier in February, Anoushka Shankar appeared on The Graham Norton Show, again alongside Gorillaz. That episode marked the first time an Indian sitarist performed on the long-running chat show. On that occasion, Shankar played “Orange County” with Kara Jackson. "Coming down off this tour is going to hit hard," she had shared.
Across “The Mountain” and these television spots, the instrumentation stayed central. Anoushka Shankar’s sitar, the Bangash brothers’ sarod and Asha Bhosle’s voice formed a key axis. Gorillaz used this mix to present a cross-continental collaboration that stressed emotional range and detailed sound design across cultures.
