Bakrid 2026 Date In India: Will Eid al-Adha Be Celebrated On My 27 Or May 28 In India?
Bakrid or Eid al-Adha 2026 will be marked on different days in India, after the Dhul-Hijjah crescent moon was not seen. Most states will celebrate on Thursday, May 28, 2026, while Jammu and Kashmir will observe the festival a day earlier, on Wednesday, May 27. T

The change in date has already altered official schedules. The Department of Personnel and Training shifted the Bakrid holiday for Central Government offices in Delhi and New Delhi to May 28. The Supreme Court updated its calendar as well, and the National Stock Exchange confirmed there will be no trading on May 28.
Bakrid 2026 and Eid al-Adha 2026 holiday dates across India
The main question for many families is whether Bakrid 2026 falls on May 27 or May 28. Religious bodies announced that the crescent moon marking Dhul-Hijjah did not appear, so Bakrid 2026 and Eid al-Adha 2026 will be observed on May 28 in most Indian states.
However, regional practices have created one major exception. Religious authorities in Jammu and Kashmir declared that Eid al-Adha 2026 would be celebrated there on May 27. The Union Territory is following its own moon sighting reports, which differ from those used for the rest of the country.

Bakrid 2026 and Eid al-Adha 2026 state holidays and exam changes
Kerala will have two days of public holidays linked to Bakrid 2026 and Eid al-Adha 2026. A notification from the General Administration Department noted that May 27 was already a holiday for the “festival of sacrifice'. "Since 'Id-Ul-Ad'ha' (Bakrid) is being celebrated in the state on May 28, the government is pleased to order that Thursday, May 28, 2026, will also be a holiday...," the notification said.
In Telangana, the Sadar Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Deccan confirmed that Eid al-Adha 2026 would fall on May 28, after Dhul-Qa'dah completed 30 days. Andhra Pradesh followed this guidance and shifted the Bakrid holiday to May 28. The government there also postponed Intermediate Public Advanced Supplementary Examinations originally planned for that date.
West Bengal adjusted its plan for Bakrid 2026 and Eid al-Adha 2026 as well. "West Bengal declared 28th May, 2026 (Thursday) as a public holiday on account of Id-Ud-Zoha (Bakrid)." The state government also cancelled the previously announced holidays on May 26 and May 27 to match the confirmed festival date.
The altered holiday arrangements began after religious organisations stated that the crescent moon for Dhul-Hijjah had not been seen. That statement fixed the start of the Islamic month and placed Eid al-Adha 2026 on May 28 for most regions. Courts, education boards and government departments then brought their schedules into line.
Jammu and Kashmir remains the key outlier for Bakrid 2026. Local religious authorities in the Union Territory announced that the festival would be held on May 27, reflecting regional moon sighting traditions. People in the area will therefore offer Eid prayers and mark the occasion one day earlier than most of India.
With these decisions, Bakrid 2026 and Eid al-Adha 2026 will fall on two different days across the country, depending on local practice. Most states, markets and central institutions will treat May 28 as the official holiday, while Jammu and Kashmir, and Kerala’s first day of leave, will observe the festival on May 27.
