Ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, the government issued a statement stating the app has been disabled for a definite period. The National Testing Agency recommended the suggestion in view of cheating rackets and to prevent the circulation of misleading or fabricated “paper leak” claims around the medical entrance test.

When Will Telegram Ban End In India?

The restriction applies for a limited period ending June 22, 2026. The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination is scheduled for June 21. Users in India are therefore facing difficulty opening Telegram, sending messages, loading groups or accessing channels while the order remains in force.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a direction under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, to restrict access to Telegram in India, according to a report in PTI.

The action follows recommendations from the National Testing Agency, which conducts NEET-UG and other major entrance examinations.

In its statement, the NTA said the step was taken “in the interest of public order” because cheating networks were allegedly using the messaging platform to target candidates appearing for the re-examination. The agency described the restriction as a temporary measure, not a permanent ban on Telegram in India.

Unable To Download Telegram Media? Here's What Happened

Telegram users complained that they were unable to refresh chats or download media.

Telegram has been asked to disable, in India, the message-editing feature for already-posted messages for a defined period ending June 30, 2026, according to a report in PTI. The NTA said this feature had been misused to fabricate after-the-event “paper leak” evidence relating to national examinations.

The concern is that a message can be posted before an exam and edited later to make it appear as if questions or answers were shared in advance.

Is Telegram banned permanently in India?

Based on the NTA statement, Telegram has not been permanently banned in India. The restriction has been described as temporary and linked specifically to the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination.

This means users should avoid assuming that their accounts have been blocked or deleted. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Telegram app may not solve the problem as it is not a technical issue.
