When Mallika did Govind Menon's Khwahish (2003), the entire film community was shocked. The seventeen smooches with co-star Himanshu Mallik were the most talked about and Mallika became a star overnight. But, it is important to keep in mind that Khwahish was not her first film. Mallika was earlier seen in a side role in Vashu Bhagnani's Jeena Sirf Mere Liye.
Who would have ever thought that this beautiful girl from a conservative family in Rohtak, Haryana would come such a long way? Brought up in a 'typical' Jat family, Mallika broke away from her family cocoon, got urban education and expressed her desire to be an actress. Her father, being very authoritative by nature insisted that she got married. Mallika Sherawat got married to one Capt. Gill from Delhi on the persistence of her family.
However, not somebody to be tied down, she soon divorced her husband and ran away to Mumbai, the 'city of dreams' to pursue her dream to be an actress. Born as Reema Lamba, Mallika chose to change her name as 'Mallika' means princess and Sherawat is her mother's maiden name.
Hailing from a non-filmi background, and not having any 'god father' in the film industry, Mallika struggled until she finally got a break with Khwahish followed with Murder (2004) opposite Emraan Hashmi. The film was directed by Anurag Basu.
The story of how she bagged the role is very interesting. Apparently, Mahesh Bhatt spot her on a television show expressing her opinions freely. That's it. Mallika was immediately offered the role. The film was a sensation and this erotic thriller changed her destiny forever.
Mallika, who wears short bikinis and 'smooches' with breathtaking sensuality, has inspired dozens of girls to shed their 'sati savitri' image and become bolder!
In recognition of her contribution to the Hindi film industry, Zee Cine Awards has nominated Mallika in the 'Best Actress' category this year. While the rest of the film fraternity chooses to completely ignore her, Zee Awards has decided to give the young lady her due credit.
Ten year from now, there will be many who like Mallika would hold no inhibitions about shedding their clothes or exposing on the silver screen. However, Mallika will always be among the first to have set the trend for skimpily clothed 'I don't care' image in the Bollywood industry. With many more films like Kis Kis Ki Kismat opposite Dharmendra and Bache Rehna Re Baba with Rekha, Mallika is ready to go...
