He is relatively new to Bollywood, but has managed to make a place in the heart of his audience. At 23 he has three movies to his credit. In 2003, he made his debut in Ken Ghosh's Ishq Vishk Pyaar Vyaar , opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Tresurywala. The movie proved to be a great hit and did well at the box office. His first big screen appearance was in a dance sequence in Taal. He is a part of Shaimak Davar's dance troupe and apparently Shaimak's favourite.

Born to Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azim, Shahid claims to have inherited his acting talent from his parents. Though his parents separated when he was very young, he maintains a good relation with them.

He won the "Hero Cycles stardust Award" and "Film Fare" for the best New Comer in 2003. After Ishq Vishk Pyaar Vyaar, he did another Ken Ghosh movie, Fida,, a thriller. Here he was cast opposite Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. He has a couple of movies lined up. He is steadily climbing the career ladder.

Meanwhile, over 'Koffee with Karan,' Karan Johar's talk show on Star World, Kareena Kapoor confirmed the long standing rumour of a special relationship with Shahid Kapoor. Then the new hot couple hit headlines when Midday, a Mumbai based tabloid published their pictures smooching each other at an upmarket restaurant in Mumbai. Shahid and Kareena denied them and filed a legal suit against Midday. Midday however apologized but stood by their stand that the pictures were original and not morphed.
