Konkana Sen- A Bengali Beauty

Born on 3rd December 1979 in New Delhi, Konkona Sen Sharma is the daughter of the legendary Bengali actress Aparna Sen. Her father is Mukul Sharma, a renowned science writer and journalist. Her maternal grandfather, Chidananda Dasgupta , is a film critic, scholar, professor, writer. He was one of the co-founders of the Calcutta Film Society with Satyajit Ray and Harisadhan Dasgupta. Her grandmother Supriya Dasgupta is a cousin of legendary modern Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. She has an elder sister who is 10 years older than her. She is settled in U.S.

Konkona was a student of Modern High School for Girls, Calcutta as well as the Calcutta international school. She graduated in English from St. Stephen's College in 2001, Delhi. If not as an actress she would have become a journalist.

Konkona made her debut as a child artist in the film Indira. She played the role of a boy who was Aparna Sen's son. Konkona is called Koko by her loved ones. She played Shabana Azmi's daughter in the telefilm Picnic. It was during this film that Shabana Azmi nicknamed her as Koko. Mother - daughter combination has delivered some good movies of rather unspoken themes like Mr and Mrs. Iyer and 15 Park Avenue.

Her role as Mrs. Iyer won her the national award for best actress in her groundbreaking performance in 2003. It was the first time that her mother was directing her in a lead role. The success of Madhur Bhandarkar's Page 3 opened the page 3 culture. Here she played the role of a naÏve journalist, Madhavi, who was shocked by the bizarreness of a culture. Her performance in this movie was awesome.

Konkona played the role of a schizophrenic in the movie 15 Park avenue, the role of Mithi suffering from schizophrenia. She has also acted in a variety of Bengali movies like Amodhini , Titli and Amu which has made some of her performances unforgettable. Konkona has acted in English films Amavas a horror film by Siddhartha Srinivasan, Chaye Pani Etc and Mira Nair's The Namesake.

She has got a National Film Award for Best Actress in 2003 for Mr and Mrs Iyer. In 2005 she received Zee Cine Award for best female debut in Page 3. She received her first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in Omkara in 2006. She also won the Zee Cine Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role- Female, for Omkara. In Omkara she portrays the role of Indu who is Emilia in Shakespeare 's Othello. In the same year 2006, she did another movie, Deadline: Sirf 24 Ghante. Her latest releases in 2007 are Traffic Signal and Life in a Metro. She has given a raving performance in Life in a Metro.

Konkona is hailed as one of the most talented actress of recent times . All her movies are of unusual themes .She is working on Rituparna Ghosh's Sunglass and Pradeep Sarkar's Laga Chunri Mein Daag. She is hoping that it would be a hit when released.
