London (Reuters): Director Michael Mann's updated version of Miami Vice shot to the top of the UK box office on its opening weekend, despite a tepid reception from the critics. The darker, grittier remake of the 1980s cocaine cops television series, with Colin Farrell as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs, took 2.23 million pounds to topple Disney's animated comedy Cars, according to figures from Screen International. Down one at third was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, as was Friends star Jennifer Aniston's marital comedy The Break-up in fourth.

New at five was My Super ex-Girlfriend, in which regular guy Luke Wilson discovers the perils of dumping superhero Uma Thurman. At six, down from four, was Superman Returns with teenage spy thriller Stormbreaker down two at seven. The Warner Brothers animation Ant Bully, the story of how a boy who floods an ant colony with his water pistol is magically reduced to insect size and sentenced to hard labour, was eighth after its first weekend. On the way down at ninth was Garfield and at 10th Over the Hedge.
