George Clooney
Hollywood star George Clooney has been named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in honor of his humanitarian work.

Clooney, who has been campaigning for a long time on behalf of refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan, now joins fellow actor Michael Douglas and musician Yo-Yo Ma in accepting the honor. According to the UN spokesman Michele Montas, Clooney is being recognized for focusing public attention on crucial international political and social issues.

Last month, Clooney and his Ocean's Thirteen costar Don Cheadle were awarded the Peace Summit Award at the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Rome, for raising awareness about the genocide in Darfur.
