Naked Gun star Leslie Nielsen dies of pneumonia

Canadian actor Leslie William Nielsen died at 5:34 pm EST on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The comedian was popularly known for his films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun. According to his agent John S Kelly, the 84-years-old actor was suffering from pneumonia and he breathed his last while he was undergoing treatment at a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale.

"We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television," the Associated Press quotes his agent John S Kelly's statement.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Nielsen started his career as an aerial gunner in the air force and later he worked as a radio disc jockey. But he got his first big break in 1950 with a Studio One television appearance and this paved way to Hollywood. He entered films with the The Vagabond King in 1954.

Nielsen had a long straight career. He starred in nearly 100 films and 150 TV dramas. He started acting career with serious role in science flick like Forbidden Planet in 1956 and later he took on comedy roles and became very popular. He is always remembered for his acting in 1980′s Airplane! and the three Naked Gun movies.
