Academy Award Nominee American Sniper Rules US Box Office

Bradley Cooper starrer war drama, American Sniper has been getting very good response in theaters. The Clint Eastwood directed movie hit the theaters on Friday and has ruled the box office thus becoming the highest grosser of January.

American Sniper has become the top-grossing movie in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend, collecting $90.2 million in ticket sales which set a record.

The movie has been nominated for the upcoming Oscars with 6 nods including Best Film Editing, Best Actor, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

"The Wedding Ringer" came in second with weekend sales of $21 million while animated cartoon film, Paddington collected $19.3 million.

The three-day take for "American Sniper" was a record for a January weekend, surpassing the $68.5 million brought in by "Avatar" over the first weekend of 2010, reports Bloomberg.

American Sniper is a biopic movie which has been getting a lot of nominations this award season. The movie follows the story of Chris Kyle, a lethal sniper in the Iraq War, played by Bradley Cooper.

Based on Kyle's 2012 memoir of the same name, the film explores the physical and psychological trauma of combat in the Iraq War. The war drama also co-stars Sienna Miller as Cooper's on-screen wife.
