'Cinderella' Tops US Box Office With $70.1 Million In Opening Weekend

Cinderella has been making news since the release date was coming closer. The Disney's live-action take on the famous fairytale "Cinderella" grossed an estimated USD 70.1 million at the North American weekend box office after its release last week.

It wasn't the highest-grossing opening for a Disney movie in March. (That title belongs to "Alice in Wonderland" and "Oz the Great and Powerful.")

Cinderella has turned out to be the top 6 highest March opening weekend at box office in 2015. However, Cinderella could not beat 2010's Alice in Wonderland which collected $116,101,023 and landed on the 2nd place.

'Cinderella' Tops US Box Office With USD 70.1 Million Opening Weekend

The movie starring Lily James has a bigger opening than Disney's "Maleficent" (USD 69.4 million) despite the fact that the 2014 movie has a more famous female lead, Angelina Jolie. Overseas, the film raked in USD 62.4 million for a worldwide total of USD 132.5 million.

Attached to the screenings of "Cinderella" is animated short "Frozen Fever", which features the "Frozen (2013)" characters. This provided a double dose of family entertainment, especially after a string of R-rated films in recent weeks.

"Run All Night", the latest action film starring Liam Neeson, entered the chart at No 2 with an estimated USD 11 million. It is a weak debut compared to Neeson's "Tak3n", which opened to USD 39.2 million in January.
