Upcoming Hollywood Movies of 2015 Based On True Events

While film industry is flooded with fiction works and lots of supernatural and fantasy films, non-fiction films also hold a special place and make it count every award season. It is fun and entertaining to watch imaginative work on the big screen, but it is also important to know how some true events occurred and effected lives.

Like every year, 2015 is also lined with some of the anticipated Hollywood movies based on true stories. Some of the Hollywood movies releasing this year (based on true stories) include The Walk, Pawn Sacrifice, Black Mass, Steve Jobs and many more.

While the first quarter of the year is over with the release of some biopics, we still have a few months left for the best. From Legend (which deals with the rise and fall of the Kray twins) to Truth (based on the Killian documents controversy), we have some of the anticipated Hollywood movies based on true events which will release before the Oscars 2016.

Some of the Hollywood movies of 2015 based on true events have gathered too much attention. For example, British-French biographical drama film, The Program is about Lance Armstrong and is based on Walsh's book 'Seven Deadly Sins'.

Then we have the biopic of Steve Jobs yet again but this time, it is coming from Oscar winning director, Danny Boyle. A few movies have already started garnering Oscar buzz and are one of the front runners post the film festival season's rave reviews.

Here is a list of upcoming Hollywood movies of 2015 based on true events which must not be avoided by any means!


The upcoming movie is based on Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) who wishes to leave her pension benefits to domestic partner Stacie Andree (Ellen Page) but due to opposite sex partner rules, she was denied. The movie shows how Laurel fights to give the pension benefits to her same sex partner.


Inspired by true events, the movie shows Suffragette movement of women, Britain's long and violent journey toward granting women the right to vote in the early 20th century. Starring Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan, the movie will hit in October this year.

The Walk

Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays the high-wire artist, Philippe Petit. The true story shows Petit's 1974 attempt to cross the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Steve Jobs

Danny Boyle has cast Michael Fassbender as Jobs in the biopic which releases on 9th October. It is based on a screenplay written by Aaron Sorkin, which was adapted from Walter Isaacson's biography Steve Jobs.

In The Heart Of The Sea

The Ron Howard's biographical thriller tells the true story of a whaleship from Nantucket that was attacked by a sperm whale in 1820. The whaleship Essex is crewed by Captain George Pollard, Jr. (Benjamin Walker), first mate Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), second mate Matthew Joy (Cillian Murphy), and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson (Tom Holland).


Starring Tom hardy who plays twins, the film is based on the book The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins by John Pearson, which deals with the rise and fall of the Kray twins; the relationship that bound them together, and charts their gruesome career to their downfall and imprisonment for life in 1969.

The underwhelming adaptation of the 2005 documentary about US political consultants hired to to help an American-educated Bolivian politician win the 2002 Bolivian presidential election has started creating Oscar buzz for Sandra Bullock (Best Actress).


The movie takes back to 2001 when The Boston Globe's "Spotlight" team, the oldest continuously operating newspaper investigative unit in the United States cover the Massachusetts Catholic sex abuse scandal, for which The Globe won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

The Program

Eddie Redmayne is getting accolades for his portrayal as artist Einar Wegener in The Danish Girl, who transitions to Lili Elbe, and one of the first people known to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

The Big Short

The Ryan Gosling, brad Pitt, Steve Carell and Christian Bale starrer biographical drama film is based on the 2010 book of the same name by Michael Lewis, about the Financial crisis of 2007-2010 by the build-up of the housing and credit bubble.
