Who was Choi Sung Bong?

Choi Sung Bong has been grabbing headlines for a controversy relating to his health issues. The late singer claimed that he was suffering from cancer in 2021 and collected donations from people.

But later, it was revealed that he lied about being terminally ill, leading to his downfall. As per South Korean news agency Yonhap, Choi Sung Bong apologised for his mistake on his YouTube channel before his death.

Bong comes from an underprivileged background and had to drop out of music school because he couldn't pay the fees. He worked as a labourer and landed his big singing break in 2011 after he participated in Korea's Got Talent.

He was placed in the second position on the reality show, and his performance on Ennio Morricone's Nella Fantasia not only won the judges hearts but those of several other prominent celebs across the world, including K-Pop star BoA and Justin Bieber.

Choi Sung Bong controversy

The singer claimed that he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, thyroid cancer, and prostate cancer. But later on, Choi Sung Bong revealed that he lied about being ill and that he faked the medical reports.

The K-Pop star was also accused of misusing one billion he has received from crowdfunding to cover entertainment costs.

Well, there have been a lot of suicides reported in the past few months. In May, 29-year-old Haesoo and K-Pop boy band Astro's member Moonbin, who died in April, reportedly committed suicide.

South Korea is regarded as the world's suicide capital. When it comes to the number of suicides, South Korea ranks at the top among OECD countries.

Many reports suggest that a lack of social security and immense academic and job pressures, among other reasons, are contributing to the nation's high suicide rate. When it comes to the Korean entertainment industry, it is criticised for being brutal and for its cutthroat competition.
