'Disgusting': Furious Netizens SLAM Censor Board For Not Cutting Use Of Gita During S*x Scene In Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer Sparks Outrage: Christopher Nolan's latest offering Oppenheimer was released in theatres on July 21 amid massive buzz. The film was deemed a Hollywood blockbuster and has garnered widespread attention and accolades since its release.
Oppenheimer, the film, which explores the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb made a humongous opening in India and raked in Rs 13.50 crores at the India box-office.
However, amidst the movie's commercial success, a scene involving the recitation of the Bhagavad Gita during a sex scene has ignited a wave of controversy. Media reports suggest that the scene in question features a woman making a man recite verses from the sacred Hindu scripture, Bhagavad Gita, during an intimate moment.
The scene has garnered massive outrage with netizens criticising the filmmakers as well as the censor board for cutting the use of Gita during the scene. It is to note that the visuals in the scene were toned down while retaining the reference to the Bhagavad Gita, while the film was released in India.
A Twitterati wrote, "I was planning to go today, but then I saw viral scenes in movie on Geeta, then I decided to not go." Another user wrote, "Hindus have been celebrating the mention of the Bhagwad Gita in the Oppenheimer movie, but they are left angry and perplexed at the blatant disrespect of the Gita by Hollywood. Mentioning holy verses while having sex is considered disrespectful and racist."
"There is no historical evidence that J Robert #Oppenheimer used to receive Bhagvad Geeta Paath lessons from his sex-partners during sex. Woke Hollywood has no reason to give any more value to Geeta than a petty prop. But why is Bharat so comfortable with this?," wrote a third user.
Earlier, Save Culture Save India Foundation, led by Uday Mahurkar, shared a press release condemning the scene. Mahurkar expressed concern and demanded immediate action from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B).

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer marks Christopher Nolan's first movie to receive an R-rating, while the Indian censor board granted the film a U/A rating after the makers voluntarily shortened specific shots of the sex scenes. These alterations were done owing to the uncertainty of whether the censor board would approve the scene as it originally stood.
