Prime Video has announced the premiere of the Amazon Original film, Broken Rage, directed, written by, and starring Takeshi Kitano. This film will debut at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 6. Notably, it is the first Japanese film produced for streaming to be officially selected for this prestigious event.
Broken Rage features a diverse cast including Tadanobu Asano and Nao Omori. The film will be available exclusively on Prime Video in 2025. The story revolves around a hitman named Nezumi, played by Kitano, who navigates a dangerous path between law enforcement and the yakuza.
Eclectic Ensemble Cast
The ensemble cast includes Tadanobu Asano as a lead detective trying to turn Nezumi into an informant. Asano is known for his roles in Kitano's Zatōichi (2003) and Kubi (2023), and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Shogun (2023). Nao Omori, who has appeared in several of Kitano's films such as Dolls (2002) and Outrage Coda (2017), also plays a detective.
Shidō Nakamura portrays the yakuza boss overseeing the drug trade, while Hakuryu plays a young boss. Other notable cast members include Takashi Nishina, So Kaku, Gekidan Hitori, Masanori Hasegawa (Nishikigoi), Azusa Babazono, and Mogura Suzuki (Kuki Kaidan).
Unique Storytelling Approach
The film takes an unconventional approach by blending comedy with violent themes. The first half follows Nezumi's struggle for survival amidst police and yakuza conflicts. The second half shifts into a self-parodying comedy that retells the same story with humour.
Takeshi Kitano continues to push boundaries with his latest venture. With over 35 years of experience in filmmaking, he remains a significant figure in Japanese cinema. "When I first read the script for Broken Rage, I was surprised by the unprecedented twists and turns in the story," said Tadanobu Asano.
Cast Reactions
Nao Omori expressed his excitement about working with Kitano again: "First of all, I was overjoyed to be able to work with Takeshi Kitano again, a director I deeply admire." He added that despite initial uncertainties about the new creative direction, the set maintained an excellent atmosphere filled with laughter.
The key art and first look images from Broken Rage were also revealed by Prime Video. These visuals offer a glimpse into the film’s unique blend of gritty crime-action and comedy. The global premiere at Venice marks a significant milestone for Japanese streaming films on an international platform.
