For those that have been big fans of the 'Solo Leveling' anime series and want to relive their favourite moments of the show, or those of you that are looking to get into the anime, here is a review of the film 'Solo Leveling - ReAwakening' that will tell you what to expect and look forward to.
What Is The Anime 'Solo Leveling' All About
To summarize 'Solo Leveling' quickly, the story follows the protagonist Sung Jinwoo in a modern fantasy setting. In his world, portals to another dimension called 'gates' have opened all around the world and humans have awakened to superpowers. These superpowered humans are referred to as hunters and are tasked with entering into gates to defeat the monsters inside and keep humanity safe.
Sung Jinwoo is considered the lowest rank of hunter in his area, but upon reaching a near death scenario in a dungeon he reawakens to new powers and the ability to level up. With his ever-growing powers, we see both Sung Jinwoo grow as a hunter and also learn more about the nature of the gates and the system that seems to be keeping him alive.
Why You Should Watch 'Solo Leveling - ReAwakening'
'Solo Leveling - ReAwakening' is a movie that is a must-watch for both anime fans that are looking to get into this power fantasy series, and those that have already watched all of the first season and are eagerly waiting for more.
The movie takes many of the episodes of the first season of the 'Solo Leveling' anime and condenses it into 2 hours of the season's best moments and plot. It makes it so that anyone new to the series can immediately catch up on what all happened in the first season and look forward to the second season of 'Solo Leveling' which is coming in January, 2025.
The film also holds something special for hardcore fans who've already watched the first season of the anime. It not only features some of the best moments of the first season for fans to relive, but also some clips of the first two episodes of the second season, meaning that those who watch the film can get an early look at what 'Solo Leveling Season 2' will look like, and how Sung Jinwoo will fight and dominate every battle alongside his army of shadows.
The Excellent Cast And Crew Behind The Movie 'Solo Leveling - ReAwakening'
Director Shinsuke Nakashige has done an excellent job in being able to condense the story of the first season of 'Solo Leveling' down to less than an hour by picking some of its most iconic action scenes and important story beats. Credit must also go to Background Art Director Yasuhiro Okumura, CG Director Toshitaka Morioka, Sound Director Ryo Tanaka, VFX Director Daichi Iseki, and Music Composer Hiroyuki Sawano; as without them the manhwa would've never come to life as beautifully as it did.
It doesn't matter whether you're watching the Japanese Dub with voice talents like Taito Ban, Genta Nakamura, or Haruna Mikawa; or the English Dub voiced by professionals like Aleks Le, Justin Briner, and Rebecca Wang. Every member of the voice cast has done an excellent job in portraying the fear and tension of living in a cruel fantasy world, as well as the highs of overcoming impossible odds.

In Conclusion
'Solo Leveling - ReAwakening' is the beginning of a new trend in the power fantasy genre of anime. Most animes of such variety tend to follow the isekai genre, where a protagonist from the normal world is teleported to a fantasy one. Solo Leveling, and many other Korean comics instead opt for stories revolving around regular people trying to survive when their modern world gets turned into an almost fantasy game-like environment with level ups, skills, and gear. This new type of power fantasy anime is sure to breathe new life into an otherwise relatively stale genre of anime.
As stated above, those interested in watching 'Solo Leveling - ReAwakening' can watch it in IMAX theatres from December 4th, 2024, or in other theatres from December 6th, 2024 onwards.
