The series has been described by Netflix as follows, "A helicopter lands on the roof of Sweden's safest cash depot and the police can only watch as the robbers disappear along with several million kronor. Not a single shot is fired. Based on true events, The Helicopter Heist tells the story of the meticulous planning and secret drama behind one of the most daring crimes in history."

The event in particular that this crime series is based on was called 'The Vastberga Helicopter Robbery'. A book was written on this event as well, titled 'Helikopterranet', which was written by author Jonas Bonnier.
