Amazon MGM Studios has announced that the soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Season Two: Amazon Original Series Soundtrack) will be released globally on August 23rd. This release coincides with the much-anticipated return of the series later this month. The full episodic score, composed by Emmy Award-winner Bear McCreary, will be available on all music streaming platforms.
Digital and streaming options for the Season Two soundtrack will be accessible from August 23rd. On the same date, vinyl versions can be pre-ordered through Amazon Music. Additionally, a special Collector's Edition will be exclusively available for pre-order on Amazon Music. Following each episode, a weekly soundtrack album containing that episode's score will be released solely on Amazon Music.
New Musical Collaborations
For this season, McCreary has invited two renowned vocalists to contribute to new songs. Grammy-nominated artist Rufus Wainwright lends his voice to "Old Tom Bombadil," bringing a thoughtful introspection to the piece. Jens Kidman, lead singer of the Grammy-nominated Swedish extreme-metal band Meshuggah, delivers a terrifying rendition of "The Last Ballad of Damrod," a song about a vicious Hill-troll.
McCreary continues to draw inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's writings while balancing diverse musical influences. "I am honored to continue forward on this journey, bringing the events of Tolkien's Second Age to life on the screen," says McCreary.
Star Contributions
The series' stars also contribute their vocal talents to several songs on the soundtrack. Sophia Nomvete's character Princess Disa sings to the mountain as a lead resonator. Benjamin Walker, portraying an Elven king, performs a sorrowful tune in Tolkien's Elvish language. Rory Kinnear and Daniel Weyman collaborate on a reprise of "Old Tom Bombadil."
"This new soundtrack is a stunning companion to the series' continued exploration of the Second Age," said Bob Bowen, worldwide head of music for Amazon MGM Studios. "With the debut of Season Two on the horizon, we're excited to give fans a further glimpse into the epic series."
Season Two Details
The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Prime Video on August 29, 2024. It will be available in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide and in multiple languages.
In this season, Sauron returns after being cast out by Galadriel. Without an army or ally, he must rely on his cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power. These rings will enable him to bind all peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.
The new season builds upon Season One's epic scope and ambition. It plunges beloved characters into increasing darkness, challenging them to find their place in a world teetering on calamity. As friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, elves, dwarves, orcs, men, wizards, and Harfoots struggle valiantly to hold onto what matters most—each other.
For Season One’s score, McCreary combined symphonic orchestra with bombastic percussion and folk instruments from Europe and North Africa. He also included solo vocalists and choirs singing in Tolkien’s iconic languages. In Season Two, he introduces dynamic new themes such as Bulgarian women's choir for Rhûn and children's choir for Eregion.
After collaborating with Fiona Apple for Season One’s "Where the Shadows Lie," McCreary continues this tradition by inviting featured vocalists Rufus Wainwright and Jens Kidman for new songs in Season Two.
This upcoming release promises an enriching musical experience that complements the series' narrative depth and visual grandeur.
