'Anora' Wins 3 Categories At Independent Spirit Awards, Sean Baker Calls For Change In Film Industry

Anora Wins 3 Categories At Independent Spirit Awards

The official Film Independent YouTube channel just recently posted a clip from the Independent Spirit Awards. The clip is for the announcement of the Best Feature film at the event, with the winner of the award being the movie Anora.

Anora was competing for the award category against other equally great films such as 'I Saw The TV Glow', 'Nickel Boys', 'Sing Sing', and 'The Substance'. Anora not only won the Best Feature film award at the Independent Spirit Awards, but the movie also won 'Best Director' and 'Best Lead Performance' as well, with the awards going to Sean Baker and Mikey Madison respectively. Anora was also tied for the most nominations for the event alongside movie 'I Saw The TV Glow'.

While Sean Baker himself didn't give a speech for winning 'Best Feature Film' award for Anora, he did give a speech after receiving the 'Best Director' award, where he spoke about how he was proud to be selected as a nominee alongside so many great films, and went into depth on how much of a struggle it is to make an indie movie in the current climate of the film industry. The full speech, uploaded by the Film Independent YouTube channel, can be watched below.

"This is simply unsustainable," he said in his speech. "We are creating product that is creating jobs and revenue for the entire industry. We shouldn't be barely getting by."

Anora has been described by the film's official website in the following manner, "Sean Baker's Palme d'Or winner ANORA is an audacious, thrilling, and comedic variation on a modern day Cinderella story. Mikey Madison (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) captivates as Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire. However, when Vanya's parents catch wind of the union, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York."

The film is directed by Sean Baker who also wrote the script for the film. The cast for the film includes many talented actors and actresses such as Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, and more.
