BAFTA 2025: Karla Sofia Gascon's Controversial Tweets Might Cost Emilia Perez During Awards; Deets

Emilia Perez is one of the most nominated films of the British Academy Film Awards of 2025, with a total of 11 nominations all in different categories. It seems, however, that despite that, the film may struggle to win in any of the categories due to both stiff competition, poor reception of the film with the public, as well as the recent controversy surrounding Emilia Perez lead actress Karla Sofia Gascon.
While Emilia Perez received great praise by critics during the launch of the film, there were many that pointed out that the film didn't properly portray Mexican culture as well as the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, French director Jacques Audiard himself admitted to not having done much research on Mexico both before and during the process of filming Emilia Perez.
Coupled with that is the problem of Karla Sofia Gascon's very controversial tweets from 2019-2021 resurfacing. In those tweets, the actress expressed hateful anti-religious sentiments and controversial takes on world events. Some of the things she wrote in her tweets include, "I'm Sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we'll have to teach Arabic." and "I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins." as reported by Variety.
The actress has since deleted those tweets and apologized for them in a recent statement to Variety. Still, the damage to her reputation and the notoriety surrounding her name may affect how the movie might be rated during the Awards ceremony, especially when put up against films like Conclave and The Brutalist which so far have received very positive reception by both critics and audiences.
