De-extinction Of Direwolves: The news of de-extinction of direwolves has taken the internet by storm on Monday after it is reported that the ice age predator, which went extinct nearly 10,000 years ago, has been brought back to life by a biotech company in Dallas, Texas. The company has announced the birth of three direwolf puppies Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi recently, with the help of ancient DNA from 13000-year-old tooth 72000-year-old skull. However, not many know the fact that author of fantasy drama Game of Thrones, where direwolves played a key role, George R. R. Martin was involves in making the project successful.

How Is George R. R. Martin Involved In De-extinction Of Direwolves?

According to the reports, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin was an investor on the project by Colossal Biosciences. In an interview with CBR, Colossal co-founder Ben Lamm claimed that the celebrated American author has also met the puppies before the news of their birth was made public. Revealing the author's reaction he revealed that Martin 'cried' upon seeing the wolf puppies, "I did fly George out to meet the Wolves, and he cried! He completely cried. He said this was like one of the greatest things that he's ever seen," he said.

Talking about their characteristics, Lamm further revealed, "I'd say initially that they were more playful and kind of more puppy-like up until recently. Now they're acting more like wolves."

How Is Direwolves Related To Game Of Thrones?

For the unversed, direwolves became famous after the fantasy drama's success, where direwolves were the sigil of House Stark. After the birth of the puppies, a photo of them napping on the iron throne went widely viral.

The photo was shared with a caption, "The two newly born baby Dire Wolves, brought back from extinction by genetic engineering, seated on the Iron Thrones. George R.R. Martin serves as a Colossal Biosciences cultural advisor and investor, with Peter Jackson loaning his Iron Throne prop for the photoshoot."

One of the direwolves is also named after the popular character's name, Khaleesi, which was played by Emilia Clarke.
