Golden Globe Awards 2025: Who Is Payal Kapadia? First Indian Director Nominated For 'Best Director Award'

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards has had many firsts, but for the first time in this award event's history, an Indian film director has been nominated for the 'Best Director - Motion Picture' award, that being Payal Kapadia. Payal Kapadia has made history as also the first Indian female director to be nominated for such an award, with her film 'All We Imagine As Light' also nominated in the 'Best Motion Picture - Non-English Language' award category.
Prior to her working on 'All We Imagine As Light's director and writer, Payal Kapadia mostly worked on documentaries and short films. One of her short films, called 'Afternoon Clouds' gained notoriety by being selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. At the 74th Cannes Film Festival, Kapadia's documentary 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' actually won the award for best documentary for that festival. Finally, last year, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Kapadia's first full length film 'All We Imagine As Light' won the Grand Prix.
This success, unfortunately, couldn't transfer over to the Golden Globe Awards. While Payal Kapadia was nominated for the 'Best Director - Motion Picture' category, she lost the award to 'The Brutalist' director and filmmaker, Brady Corbet. Her film 'All We Imagine As Light', which was nominated for the 'Best Motion Picture - Non-English Language' category, also lost out to the french-musical film 'Emilia Perez', which was directed and written by Jacques Audiard.
While the loss this early into the year may sting, Payal Kapadia has still made history with her nomination, and there are plenty more opportunities later in the year for her talent and craftsmanship to be recognised by the larger filmmaking community.
