Oscars 2025: The Academy Awards To Continue Despite LA Fires, But Many Private Parties Cancelled

Academy Awards To Continue Despite LA Fires

The January 2025 Southern California wildfires destroyed a large part of the infrastructure in the American state, leaving many people without shelter and basic resources. While not everything was destroyed, some buildings were quite close to the fires and were in great danger of turning into ruins. One such building was The Dolby Theatre, where the Oscars have been hosted since 2002, which was less than a mile away from the dangers of the ever-growing wildfires.

Among those affected by the wildfires was the host of the 97th Academy Awards, Conan O'Brien. In a statement made to The Associated Press on Friday, he said, "Everybody I know has been affected. I'm out of my house. Fortunately, my house, ... the fire got very close but my house survived. But we won't be back in there for a long time. And I'm the lucky one. I mean, I know so many people who lost their homes and I'm just, was ridiculously lucky. So we want to make sure that that show reflects what's happening and that we put a light on the right people in the right way."

Still, he said that the show will go on and the Oscars will happen as it was planned before the wildfires took place. Still, the Oscars will also be organized so that it addresses the wildfires and the people affected by them, in the hope of creating more awareness and support for the thousands displaced by the fires.

There are also many private parties organised by talent agencies that were cancelled, such as the ones by United Talent Agency, William Morris Endeavor, Creative Artists Agency, and more. There are still some parties that will take place despite the fires, such as Vanity Fair's annual extravaganza, and Beyonce and Jay-Z's Gold Party. Most organizations, though, are going to be spending the money they saved on donations to relief funds for those affected by the Southern California wildfires.
