Speaking about collaborating with director JJ Perry, David Bautista shared how Perry's deep understanding of action filmmaking, paired with his sensitivity towards performers, shaped the experience of working on Afterburn, "One of the million reasons I love working with JJ Perry is because he is so good at action, and he is also really great at working with guys who are kind of beat up. I paid my dues in wrestling, and I paid a lot of wear and tear in wrestling, so he knows when I am needed and how far to push me, and he knows when I am not needed. There are certain shots where you are going to be master-wide with a big action scene, and he knows that is unnecessarily going to beat me up. He knows the important shots, when to bring me in, and he makes it very easy on me. I never set out to be an action star. I set out to be an actor. Along the journey of my career, I realised that to make myself a brand with purpose, I needed to tackle action, comedy, rom-coms, and all these spaces to prove my worth. When you are a brand and can generate value for studios, people listen to you. I want to get films made, and I eventually want to move behind the camera."

Elaborating on the creative collaboration behind Afterburn and the importance of emotional investment in action films, Bautista spoke about working closely with the team to ensure the film balances spectacle with heart:

"With Steve and JJ, I found great collaborators. They allow me to contribute so much. We bounce things off each other and find what works together. We all come from different backgrounds, and when we put those together, we find a formula that works. We never leave the heart out of the film. When action is overly gratuitous, people may be entertained, but they forget it. When you build relationships within that action, people become emotionally invested. That is when they want to return to a film again and again. Afterburn is about that journey. It is about the characters, their arcs, and wanting to root for them. JJ understands that filmmaking is a team effort. There is no divide between cast and crew. We are all moving in one direction to make a good film. That shared mindset is why working on Afterburn felt so natural."
