HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 3 EPISODE 1: WHO DIES IN THE BATTLE OF THE GULLET?
House of the Dragon Season 3 begins with Episode 1, Salt and Sea, Blood and Fire, continuing directly from the events of the previous season. Convinced that King's Landing is vulnerable after Alicent's visit to Dragonstone, Rhaenyra believes victory is within reach. However, the reality is very different.
Aegon has secretly escaped the Red Keep with Larys Strong, Aemond remains in the capital with Vhagar, and the Greens have secured the support of the Triarchy, whose massive fleet now threatens the Blacks' control of the Gullet. The episode centers on a large-scale naval clash as the Triarchy launches an assault on Corlys Velaryon's blockade.
Despite strategic objections from Tyland Lannister, Admiral Sharako Lohar pursues her own ambitions and attacks near High Tide. Her decision proves costly when Alyn of Hull kills her during a fierce shipboard battle, allowing the Blacks to retain control of the Gullet.
The victory comes at a heavy price. Corlys Velaryon falls into the sea during the conflict, leaving his fate uncertain by the end of the episode. Meanwhile, Tyland Lannister drowns after being thrown overboard, and following Jason Lannister's earlier death, House Lannister suffers devastating losses.
Elsewhere, Jacaerys ignores Rhaenyra's wishes and joins the battle alongside Baela. The tide initially turns in the Blacks' favor, but chaos erupts when Rhaena arrives on the wild dragon Sheepstealer. Having finally bonded with the dragon, Rhaena struggles to control it, and Sheepstealer begins attacking indiscriminately, including allied forces.
In the confusion, Jace's dragon Vermax is dragged into the sea by enemy ships. Although Jace escapes the immediate danger, he is fatally struck by a barrage of arrows moments later. His death marks another heartbreaking loss for Rhaenyra, who has now lost both Lucerys and Jacaerys during the brutal Targaryen civil war.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 3 EPISODE 1 ENDING EXPLAINED: HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST SCENE
Before the battle begins, the episode introduces a mysterious subplot involving the three dragonseeds - Ulf the White, Hugh Hammer, and Addam of Hull. While waiting on the Isle of Faces near Harrenhal for an opportunity to confront Aemond, they notice a strange antlered figure silently observing them from the forest.
The series does not reveal the figure's identity, but the moment draws attention to the Isle of Faces, a sacred location in Westerosi history where the First Men and the Children of the Forest are said to have forged peace. The brief encounter hints that the region and its secrets could play a larger role as the season progresses.
Although the Blacks emerge victorious at the Gullet, the triumph feels bittersweet. Rhaenyra suffers another devastating personal loss with Jacaerys' death, while Corlys Velaryon's fate remains uncertain. At the same time, Aemond and Vhagar continue to pose a major threat from King's Landing.
Alicent's proposal to help Rhaenyra seize the capital is still on the table, but with the war escalating and circumstances rapidly changing, the opportunity may not remain available for long.
