HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 3 EPISODE 2: RHAENYRA KILLS OTTO HIGHTOWER
After learning that Aemond and Vhagar had left for Harrenhal, Rhaenyra and Daemon seized the opportunity to march towards King's Landing with their dragonriders. As promised by Alicent, the city gates were opened without a fight, allowing the Blacks to enter the capital much more easily than expected.
Although a few loyal Green soldiers attempted to stop them inside the Red Keep, Daemon quickly overpowered them before the City Watch, led by Ser Luthor Largent, declared its support for Rhaenyra.
Once the castle was secured, Rhaenyra and Daemon began searching for King Aegon II, only to discover that he had already escaped with Larys Strong. Instead, Daemon found Otto Hightower and Lord Jasper imprisoned inside the Red Keep. Otto's capture turned out to be a surprise arranged by Larys, giving Daemon and Rhaenyra an opportunity to eliminate one of their biggest political enemies.
The two prisoners were brought before Rhaenyra for judgment. Although she initially hesitated, Otto pleaded for a quick death rather than a painful execution. Determined to show that she was capable of making difficult decisions, Rhaenyra carried out the execution herself, beheading Otto after two strikes. Daemon then executed Lord Jasper without hesitation.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 3 EPISODE 2 ENDING EXPLAINED: HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST SCENE
With Otto dead and the Red Keep under her control, Rhaenyra finally sat on the Iron Throne, marking a major turning point in the war. However, the victory was short-lived as Alicent and Helaena soon arrived and discovered Otto's lifeless body. Alicent had honoured her promise by allowing Rhaenyra to enter the city peacefully, hoping she would show mercy in return. Instead, Otto's execution destroyed any remaining trust between the two queens.
The ending also highlights Rhaenyra's transformation as a ruler. While Aegon remains alive and beyond her reach, she makes it clear that anyone responsible for challenging her claim to the throne will face severe consequences. Her decision to execute Otto proves she is no longer willing to appear weak and is prepared to use force to secure her position as the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, setting up an even bloodier conflict in the episodes ahead.
