According to the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation, Ortiz passed away after a prolonged fight with colorectal cancer. He had been dealing with the disease since 2023 and eventually succumbed to it at Ashford Hospital.

Away from his illustrious basketball career, Ortiz's life also saw moments of controversy. Back in 2011, he made headlines after authorities discovered over 200 marijuana plants at his home, leading to legal trouble that shook his public image.

Instead of immediate jail time, the court opted for rehabilitation, giving him an opportunity to turn things around. However, the situation escalated the following year when he failed a mandatory drug test, reportedly testing positive for cocaine. As a result, he was sentenced to six months in prison in 2012.

His legal challenges didn't end there. Years later, in 2022, Ortiz once again found himself in trouble with the law after being arrested in connection with an incident involving alleged assault and property damage.

Born on October 25, 1963, in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, José "Piculín" Ortiz emerged as one of the most dominant figures in the island's basketball scene. Over the course of his career, he secured multiple titles, winning as many as eight national championships.

On the personal front, Ortiz is survived by his second wife, Sylvia Ríos, who remained by his side until his passing, and his daughter, Neira Ortiz. Before this, he was married to actress Nirita Ruíz, with whom he shares his daughter. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2006.

Ortiz later found love again with Sylvia, and the two reportedly began their relationship around 2009. After several years together, they tied the knot in 2021, marking a new chapter in his personal life.
