Primate: Miguel Approached The Role With An Early Understanding Of Ben, Says Johannes Roberts

Director Johannes Roberts has revealed how actor Miguel Torres Umba brought his terrifying vision of Ben - the killer chimpanzee in Primate - to life, crediting the performer's deep emotional and physical understanding of the character from the very beginning.

Primate Miguel Approached The Role

"Ben has been the heart and soul of this family," Roberts says, explaining that the audience needed to feel an immediate connection to the character. "The audience has to feel like they can reach out and touch Ben. When he slowly starts to unravel, he doesn't understand what's happening. The family doesn't realize until it's too late to do anything."

Torres Umba's transformation from a gentle presence into a violent force is what gives the film its emotional weight. According to the filmmakers, his performance adds both power and tragedy to Ben's descent into darkness, making the horror feel deeply personal rather than purely monstrous.

Hodges adds that Torres Umba's preparation set him apart early on. "Miguel approached the role with an early understanding of Ben's movements, and through working with a movement coach and the stunt team, he has shaped a character that stands on its own," he says. "Miguel intuitively understands who Ben is, articulates the character's intentions and reactions, and has brought remarkable dedication to the role."

By blending physical performance with emotional nuance, Torres Umba helps transform Ben into more than just a creature of terror. Instead, he becomes a tragic figure, one whose transformation is as heartbreaking as it is horrifying.

Paramount releases Primate in Indian theatres on 23rd January 2026.
