    A Christmas Carol – Review

Earlier, Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis had attempted to create a feature film using strictly motion or performance, capture technology in his holiday story The Polar Express, and the action-packed Beowulf. Now movie A Christmas Carol is his third effort in this regard.

A Christmas Carol is a Walt Disney Pictures release and it is rated PG for scary sequences and images. It is a whiz-bang 3-D thrill-ride with all the emotional satisfaction squeezed out of it. It's an animation technique that results in characters that are stuck somewhere between being animated and being flesh and blood. Zemeckis has told a classic tale through new technology in the movie.

The movie is an adaptation of Charles Dickens" story, which was written in 1838. It's a fair adaptation of the story, but it is missing a certain charm that was present in those earlier adaptations. This version of A Christmas Carol has very little story and even less Christmas cheer. The movie moves at a slower pace and the chase scenes tend to distract more than they enthrall.

Ebeneezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) is a rich old miser, who hates to spend on Christmas celebration. Seven Christmas Eves after the death of his partner Jacob Marley, the ghost of Marley visits Scrooge and warns him that he will be visited by three spirits. The three spirits arrive to remind Scrooge of the events of past Christmases, to show him how those around him are celebrating the current Christmas, and to warn him of what future Christmases may hold in store if he does not change his ways.

Jim Carrey has played three versions of Scrooge as well as The Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Although he has done justice to all his roles as much as possible to him, Zemeckis could have signed in different actors for all these roles. Robin Wright Penn has played Scrooge's young love Belle. Zemeckis has changed her appearance so much so that Penn is unrecognizable.

Although the movie A Christmas Carol has amazing 3-D work, it is too cold on any emotional level. The movie can be enjoyed for the artistry, but it cannot be a full-fledged film.
