A new anime was recently added to Crunchyroll's library on July 9th, 2024. A romance anime by the name of 'The Magical Girl And The Evil Lieutenant Used To Be Archenemies'. The title may be long, but its first episode is very short, and very sweet. This review will cover a couple details about the anime that might catch your interest.
Romance In The Unlikeliest Of Places
Titles of many anime can be very literal, and that statement remains true for 'The Magical Girl And The Evil Lieutenant Used To Be Archenemies'. The two main characters, the right-hand man of an evil organisation and a magical girl, are also very simple in their backstories.
The evil lieutenant came from an elite family, and used his connections, cleverness and ruthlessness to reach the top of his evil organisation's hierarchy. Upon meeting the magical girl, he needs to now cope with the fact that he is falling in love.
The magical girl, on the other hand, came from a poor background, but got her powers from a strange cat-like spirit. Her poverty continues though, as she has multiple part-time jobs outside of her magical girl work, and is constantly malnourished.
When the two of them meet each other, it's love at first sight. It's that simple folks.
No Drama, Just Simple Love And Butterflies In Your Stomach
Unlike most romance anime, this one stays free from any drama or questions about the feelings both characters have for one another. The evil lieutenant tries to fight his feelings, but unfailingly always gives in and acts very kindly towards the magical girl. The magical girl, on the other hand, assumes the evil lieutenant to be a very good person and acts more like a damsel in distress rather than a hero fighting a villain.
While there are other parties who occasionally show their face, the anime will primarily focus on these two, and the cute moments they share with one another. It reminded me a lot of another anime called 'My Love Story!'.
The manga chapters are very short, and so the anime will probably end after one season.
