The Fantastic Four First Steps Movie Review: A Decent Comeback, But Falls Short Of Expectations

The Fantastic Four First Steps Movie Review

Rating:
3.0/5

The Fantastic Four First Steps Review: Marvel Studios' latest offering, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, marks the 37th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and attempts to bring new life to the beloved superhero team. With past versions receiving a favourable response, expectations were high for this fresh reboot.

So, does The Fantastic Four First Steps deliver the punch fans have been waiting for? The answer is-somewhat. Let's take a look at the full review below:

THE FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST STEPS PLOT REVIEW

Set in a visually rich, mid-century New York with a nostalgic tone, The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes a more grounded and emotional route rather than relying heavily on CGI spectacles. Directed by Matt Shakman, the film focuses on building real emotional bonds between the characters, taking inspiration from the 1960s comics and drawing on the creative visual styling of Alexandra Byrne's vibrant costume design.

The film follows four central characters-Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), her brother Johnny (Joseph Quinn), and their close friend Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). After a space mission goes wrong, the four gain extraordinary powers and rise to fame as superheroes.

What sets this version apart is its emotional depth. Reed is portrayed as a genius who struggles with emotional expression, while Sue plays the glue that holds the group together. Johnny is the energetic thrill-seeker with hidden insecurities, and Ben undergoes the most drastic transformation-into a living rock.

The emotional core of the film shines brightest when danger strikes in the form of the Silver Surfer, who brings with him the threat of global destruction. The stakes rise when Reed and Sue must choose between saving their unborn child and saving the world. The emotional weight of this conflict, especially the possibility of a child with unknown powers, is what gives First Steps its edge.

Despite these strong moments, the film is not without its flaws. The film feels dragged in the middle, losing the grip it establishes early on. While the climactic scenes offer an exciting mix of action and emotion, including a zero-gravity birth and cosmic sacrifices, the inconsistency in pacing might leave some viewers wanting more.

The storytelling is heartfelt, but it doesn't always keep you fully invested throughout the runtime. Also, the main villain, Galactus, just didn't work for me and failed to create the expected impact.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST STEPS PERFORMANCE REVIEW

However, there are still a few things to admire. The chemistry between the leads is strong, the visual setting is refreshingly different, and the emotional undertone offers a new flavor in the MCU. With hints about the Fantastic Four's return in Avengers: Doomsday, the movie certainly sets the stage for future possibilities.

Also, all four leads - Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn - have delivered likeable performances. However, for me, Vanessa stole the show from others in the climax scene. Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer will surely grab your attention.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST STEPS OVERALL VERDICT

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a decent reboot that focuses more on family and emotion than pure action. It's a step in the right direction for Marvel, but not a giant leap. With a few more punches and a tighter screenplay, it could've been a great comeback. For now, it's a watchable but okayish addition to the MCU.
