Producer-cum-actress Roopa Iyer has dedicated her life for the less-fortunate people of society. Earlier, the actress's movie Mukhaputa had made a big news after it was screened in many International Film Festivals. Now, Roopa's another Kannada movie Daatu (Cross Over) has won the Best Depiction Of A Woman Award at the International Images Film Festival for Women 2008 in Zimbabwe.
Three movies like Daatu from India, Emma"s Bliss from Germany and Paloma"s Delight from France were nominated for the category of Best Depiction Of A Woman Award. Finally, Roopa Iyer starrer movie Daatu from India was selected for the award.
The film Daatu has been directed by K Shivarudraiah. Roopa Iyer has played the lead lady of the movie. It deals with the struggle of a woman. The women, who on the surface is completely subservient to a very male dominated society, but who chooses with great strength to be true to herself and to 'walk out" when she has to.
Daatu is based on late Mysore Ashwatha 'Dharma Konda" short story. The story of movie is that Sharanda, while cleaning the idols of the puja room, removes a bundle of anklets from her ancestors. For this mistake she has to perform a 21 day 'Prayers of Mastamma" in the temple campus of Dharmakunda as penance. She is kidnapped by a man, who wants her to embrace Islam and marry him. She somehow escapes captivity and returns to her village, where the elders are reluctant to accept her back. She removes her hereditary anklet and leaves the village with her son to lead a new life.
The movie Daatu has been produced by Dr M Byre Gowda, Roopa Iyer, Sachin Kanabur, Spoorthinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Nakul, Ravindranath Sirivara. It has Ramachadnra Ithal's cinematography, Hamsalekha's music. Roopa Iyer, Datatreya, Rajesh, Girija Lokesh, Veena Sunder, Venkata Rao, Padma Shimoga, Dhananjaya, Madhavi, Rekha, Shashi, Venkatehs Prasad, Srinath and Master Revanth are in the casts.
