Kannada actress Umashree and actor Prakash Raj have bagged the Best Actress and Best Actor awards (Rajat Kamal), at the 55th National Film Awards, 2007. Umashree and Prakash Raj have won these awards for their performance in Kannada movie Gukabi Talkies and Tamil movie Kanchivaram respectively. Kanchivaram has also won the Swarna Kamal for Best Feature Film. Adoor Gopalakrishnan has won the Best Director Award for his Malayalam film Naalu Pennungal.
Talking about the award Umashree said, "So far, I have been treated as a theatre artiste and character artiste. But this National Award has got me the recognition of an actress. Earlier, I have won Best Actress for my acting in Gulabi Talkies at Karnataka State Film Awards. Now the National Award has increased my responsibility towards Kannada films.
Bollywood superstars like Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan had posed tough competition for actor Prakash Raj for Best Actor award, but his performance in Kanchivaram has beaten all the Bollywood biggies. Earlier, Prakash Raj has won the Best Actor for his performance in movie Iruvar in 1998. He has also won a Special Award in 2003.
Shahrukh Khan starrer Chak De! India has bagged the Best Popular Film, while Aamir Khan"s Taare Zameen Par won the Best Film on Family Welfare Award. Shankar Mahadevan won the Best Singer (male) Award for the song 'Meri Maa' from TZP. The Best Child Actor Award has been given to Sharad Goyekar for the Marathi film Tingya.

Best director: Adoor Gopalakrishnan for Naalu Pennungal (Four Women)
