Explainer: The Darshan-Sumalatha Instagram Controversy And Sumalatha’s Clarification On The Speculations

Darshan-Sumalatha Instagram Controversy Explained: Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa's recent decision to unfollow everyone on Instagram has sparked widespread speculation, including rumors that he has distanced himself from actress-politician Sumalatha Ambareesh. Amid these discussions, Sumalatha's cryptic Instagram story further fueled theories that she may have been subtly criticizing the actor. However, she has now come forward to clarify that her post was not directed at anyone in particular.
What Triggered the Speculation?
The controversy began when Sumalatha shared a quote by internet personality Caroline Middelsdorf, which read: "And the Oscar for best acting goes to... those who twist the truth, hurt people without remorse, shift the blame, and somehow still see themselves as the hero." The timing of the post led to speculation that it was aimed at Darshan, given the ongoing rumors about tensions between the two.
Sumalatha's Clarification
Addressing these assumptions, Sumalatha took to Facebook to set the record straight. She wrote, "This is to clarify a totally unnecessary controversy regarding one of my previous posts. It was not about anyone specific but rather a general observation. I don't have the habit of keeping track of who follows or unfollows me on social media." She further noted that she had only become aware of Darshan's social media activity after media reports surfaced.
Additionally, she emphasized that she does not communicate with her family or close friends through social media and urged people to avoid creating unnecessary controversy.
What Is the Background of Their Relationship?
Darshan has long considered Sumalatha's late husband, actor-politician Ambareesh, as a father figure, and he has often referred to her as 'Mother India.' Sumalatha, in turn, has publicly acknowledged Darshan as an elder son alongside her biological son, Abhishek Gowda. However, despite her public clarification, industry insiders suggest that their relationship may not be as strong as it once was.
Darshan's Legal Troubles and Career Status
Since securing bail in the high-profile Renukaswamy murder case, Darshan has largely kept to a close-knit circle of family and friends. The actor was arrested in June last year in connection with the brutal killing of a fan, allegedly orchestrated at his behest along with his longtime partner, Pavitra Gowda.
The case revolves around the murder of Renukaswamy, a medical shop worker from Chitradurga, who was allegedly abducted, tortured, and killed in a shed in Pattanagere on June 8, 2024. Reports suggest that he had sent obscene messages to Pavitra Gowda, which allegedly led to the fatal assault. His body was discovered the next day near Sumanahalli Bridge in Bengaluru. The police investigation uncovered CCTV footage and phone records linking Darshan and his associates to the crime, leading to their arrests. Along with Darshan and Pavitra Gowda, ten others were taken into judicial custody.
Although granted bail on medical grounds due to reported back issues requiring surgery, Darshan has since reportedly resumed work on his upcoming film Devil.
Darshan's Upcoming Film: Devil
Directed and written by Prakash, Devil is an action-packed drama produced by Prakash and J. Jayamma. The film stars Darshan in the lead role, alongside Rachana Rai, Mahesh Manjrekar, Jisshu Sengupta, Mukesh Rishi, and Fardeen Khan. The cinematography is handled by Sudhakar S. Raj, while the music is composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath. The film's production was put on hold following Darshan's arrest but has now reportedly resumed.
His last appearance on screen was in Kaatera.
What's Next?
Though Sumalatha has denied any rift, speculation continues regarding the status of her relationship with Darshan. With both parties choosing to focus on their respective paths, it remains to be seen whether the rumors will fade or if further developments will reignite public interest in their dynamic.
