The 11 members of a crime gang have been caught and being tortured by cops. The leader of the pack admits their brutalities and answers why they always slit throats rather than stabbing or killing in other fashion. Wonder why? The pleasure of hearing the 'hiss' sound when cutting the throats make them to kill in the same way every time. This is the opening scene of the Dandupalya and tells straight away that it is not for a lily-livered.

Dandupalya is the infamous crime gang that spread terror in and around Bangalore by slitting the throats of women and the aged before raping and robbing them in late 90s. Director Srinivasa Raju has tried to bring their barbarous acts on-screen. A group of men, mainly from Dandupalya, enters the city and makes the city to live under fear. Their approach is simple: A woman (played by Pooja Gandhi) from the gang finds a right house for the robbery where lone or elderly reside and visits the house asking for water.

When the resident goes in to bring the same, the gang members enter the house. They attack, gang rape and murder them and rob money and valuables. The shocking part of the story is that they could kill anyone for a few thousands or a small piece of gold ornament and they can eat anything including flesh of donkeys. They were also exploited by Bhat (Doddanna), a lawyer, who uses them for numerous of crimes by paying peanuts. The hunt for their heads begins after the ratio of the murders and robberies shockingly increases and Chalapathi (Ravi Shankar) is being assigned the job of finding them.

In between their story, there is a happy love track of a couple (Raghu Mukherjee and Priyanka Kothari) and there is also Bhavya, who plays the role of Raghu's mother. His life becomes misery after the two important woman of his life were raped and murdered by the same gang. However, Chalapathi manages to arrest one of the members of the group that paves way for arresting all the men from the team.

The story of the film is as popular as sayings. Especially, the people living in Bangalore from 90s are aware of their acts. However, the director has failed to make it as a watchable affair. It seems like Srinivasa Raju has penned the script based on the reports published by crime tabloids rather than completely studying the subject. The violence is glorified, which is acceptable as it is based on real life incidents, but a movie should have something more than the bloody acts. Their backgrounds, why and how they took murderous path and who were behind their acts could have made this film a wonderful product.

It is appreciable that the film throws light on their lifestyle, food habitats and way of living, but it is not enough to make the audience to sit on their seats for two-hour plus with blood and only blood spilling on-screen. Nonetheless, the actors in the film amazingly perform in their roles. Firstly, Pooja Gandhi is the lifesaver of the film. For all those, who criticised her for not being a good actress, do watch the film to see the other side of Pooja.

The way she smokes beedis, sitting and mouthing the dialogues have to be praised. Her entire body language is amazingly excellent and her costume compliment each other. Last but not least, her skin show is a treat for masses. The other members of the group played by Makarand Deshpande, Ravi Kale, etc., have done justice. Raghu Mukherjee and Priyanka Kothari look beautiful, Bhavya and Sudharani have limited roles and the choice of Ravi Shankar does not seem to have worked good for the film, as he is not impressive in the powerful role. Technically, Arjun Janya's music goes unnoticed and Ram Prasad's cinematography is good.

    Verdict: I give 2 out of 5.
