Actress Assault Case: Supreme Court To Review Trial Court's Report And Dileep's Plea Today

Actress Assault: Apex Court To Review Trial Report Today

Supreme Court Examines Assault Case Involving Actress: Today, the Supreme Court is set to deliberate on the case involving the assault on the actress.

The petition is being heard by a bench presided over by B. R. Gavai. The matter at hand involves the examination of a report submitted by the trial court, which highlights the trial's progress.

Judge Honey M. Varghese of the trial court has formally requested an extension of the trial period until March 31, 2024. This comes as the initial deadline set by the Supreme Court for the trial's conclusion lapsed on July 31.

Additionally, the state government has apprised the court of its observation that the defence has been intentionally prolonging the examination of witnesses. The trial's advancement, as outlined in the report from the trial court, will play a crucial role in the case's considerations. Furthermore, the Supreme Court is also slated to review a plea made by Dileep's legal counsel, urging an expedited trial.

Judge's Plea For Trial Extension And Challenges Faced In High-Profile Assault Case

The trial court has put forth the need for an extension, citing the necessity of three months to conclude the witness testimonies and an additional five months for the completion of lawyers' arguments and other procedural matters. Accordingly, a deadline of March 31, 2024, is being sought.

The prosecution has expressed its intention to call six more witnesses to the stand. Among them is a Magistrate who recorded a confidential statement from Balachandrakumar. The list also includes five other individuals, two of whom are investigating officers. Notably, the role of the investigating officer named Paulus is of significant importance.

Judge Honey M. Varghese, taking all these aspects into account, has indicated in a correspondence that a minimum of three additional months seems requisite based on the available documentation.

Despite the court's best efforts to adhere to the stipulated timeframe and conclude the trial, certain challenges persist. Judge Honey M. Varghese, who presides over the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court, is simultaneously engaged in other administrative duties. She holds responsibilities at the State Transport Appellate Tribunal and the Commercial Appellate Division of the Ernakulam district. Moreover, her court specialises in cases related to the prevention of offences against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Even following the conclusion of the trial proceedings, additional time is imperative to reach a verdict. In her communication, Judge Honey M. Varghese notes the necessity for an extension of eight months to bring the proceedings to completion.
