IFFK 2023: The 28th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), an annual cinematic extravaganza organized by the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy (KSCA), commenced on December 8th and will run until December 15th.

The opening ceremony took place on the 8th at the Nishagandhi Open Air Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram. Inaugurating the IFFK online, Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted that the festival stands on par with prestigious film festivals worldwide.

Additionally, he remarked that this year's Palestine solidarity films serve as a declaration of support for the Palestinian people facing challenges. Actor Nana Patekar, the chief guest, and various other guests participated in the lamp-lighting ceremony. Mayor Arya Rajendran bestowed the 'Spirit of Cinema' award upon Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu.

At the festival, V. K. Prasanth, MLA, presented the festival catalogue to actor Madhupal. The festival edition of the Academy journal Chalachithra Sameeksha was given by Oscar winner Resul Pookutty to Chalachithra Academy Vice Chairman Premkumar. Minister Saji Cherian presided over the inaugural function online.

Festival Curator Golda Sellam, International Competition Section Jury Chairperson, Portuguese Director Rita Azevedo Gomes, Latin American Package Curator Fernando Brunner, Film Academy Chairman Ranjith, District Panchayat President D. Suresh Kumar, Culture Department Secretary Mini Antony, Director N. Maya, Film Chamber President B. R. Jacob, Film Academy Secretary C. Ajoy, and others spoke. Following their speeches, the opening film 'Goodbye Julia' was screened.

Directed by Mohamed Kordofani, the film is the first Sudanese film to receive an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, a music program titled 'Layaraga Samarpanam,' conducted by Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Academy award winner and Carnatic musician Sukanya Ramgopal, was also held. The function commenced by offering condolences for the demise of CPI State Secretary Kanam Rajendran.

Diverse Cinematic Extravaganza: Highlights Of The Festival

The festival showcases 175 movies from 81 countries across 15 venues in the capital. An estimated 12,000 delegates are anticipated to attend the event. The competition category includes 14 movies, while the Malayalam Cinema Today category highlights 12 and the Indian Cinema Now category showcases seven films. Notably, the festival boasts 26 Oscar entries for Best Foreign Language Film. Additionally, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the esteemed Polish director Krzysztof Zanussi during the festival's closing ceremony.

The winner of the Suvarna Chakoram for the best film will receive a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh. The Rajata Chakoram for the best director carries a prize of Rs 4 lakh, while debutant directors will be awarded Rs 3 lakh. The director of the film eligible for the Audience Award will receive Rs 2 lakh, and the best debutant director in India qualifying for the KR Mohanan Endowment Award will be granted Rs 1 lakh.
