Anurag Kashyap Calls 'The Kerala Story' A 'Propaganda Film'

Despite its box office success and record-breaking performance, the controversy surrounding "The Kerala Story" continues to persist. Directed by Sudipto Sen, the film delves into the sensitive topic of the forced conversion of non-Muslim girls in the state.

However, a segment of society has vehemently criticised the movie, accusing it of misrepresenting the facts. Notably, Kamal Haasan previously referred to the film as a 'propaganda' film, and now filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has echoed similar sentiments. The debate surrounding the film remains a topic of discussion, adding fuel to the ongoing controversy.

In a recent interview, Kashyap acknowledged that it is difficult for cinema to be non-political in today's world, but stressed on the importance of not making "propaganda films like The Kerala Story."

According to Kashyap, the foundation of cinema should rest upon reality and truth. He expressed the view that anything rooted in facts and impartiality should not be silenced. Furthermore, the filmmaker discussed the potential dishonesty that can arise from counter-propaganda efforts.

In a previous instance, he underscored the significance of refraining from banning films, regardless of whether they are offensive or propaganda-driven. He referenced the renowned quote by Voltaire, stating, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

In a press conference held recently, Kamal was asked about his opinion on The Kerala Story. He responded, stating, "As I mentioned before, it's a propaganda film that I oppose. Merely stating 'true story' as a logo at the bottom is insufficient. It must genuinely reflect the truth, and that is not the case here."
