Novelist George Varghese Kakkanadan dies

George Varghese Kakkanadan, noted Malayalam novelist and the best modernist writer of all times died at a private hospital in his native town of Kollam on Wednesday. He was 76 and has been battling cancer for over two years now.

Considered to be one of the forerunner of modernism in Malayalam novels and short stories, Kakkanadan was known for his outspoken nature and was hugely popular among the Kerala youth in 1960s and 70s.

George Varghese Kakkanadan was a prolific writer whose bold views and opinion was greatly appreciated by readers. A few Malayalam films also has been made based on his novels. Kakkanadan won the Central Sahitya Akademi Award, the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award and other awards.
