Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair, born on May 21, 1960, is one of the best actors in the Malayalam film industry. Along with Mammootty, he has reigned Mollywood for nearly three decades.

Mohanlal made his acting debut with Thiranottam (1978), which never released owing to censorship issues. It was Rajavinte Makan (1986) that established him as a superstar of the Malayalam film industry.


Bharatham (1991) is a musical-drama, written by AK Lohithadas, directed by Sibi Malayil, and produced by Mohanlal. It stars Mohanlal, Urvashi, Nedumudi Venu, Lakshmi and Murali in the main roles. The songs were composed by M Raveendran. The film is especially known for its Carnatic Classical and Semi Classical music.


Vanaprastham (1999) is an Indian-French-German produced feature film directed by Shaji N Karun. It stars Mohanlal, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar, Kalamandalam Gopi and Venmani Haridas. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival (AFI Fest) in 1999. It is considered one of Mohanlal's best performances and gave him international acclaim.


Kireedam (1989), directed by Sibi Malayil, and written by AK Lohithadas stars Mohanlal, Thilakan and Parvathy in lead roles. Mohanlal won the 1990 National Film Award (Special Jury Award) for his role as Sethumadhavan. A sequel was released in 1993 titled Chenkol.


While on an exhibition in Germany, R Sukumaran was invited to make a movie and thus began his work as a director. His first movie was Padamudra, which was both critically and commercially successful. The movie explored the father-son relationship. Mohanlal was brilliant in the film.


Devasuram (1993), directed by IV Sasi and written by Ranjith stars Mohanlal and Revathy in lead roles. The film was a blockbuster hit and ran for more than 150 days. Mohanlal won the Filmfare Award and Kerala Film Journalists Award for Best Actor for his performance as Neelakantan.


Spadikam (1995), written and directed by Bhadran, stars Mohanlal in the lead. The film was critically acclaimed, and was also a blockbuster and received cult-fan following.


Kaalapani (1996), directed by Priyadarshan, stars Mohanlal, Prabhu Ganesan, Tabu, Nedumudi Venu, Sreenivasan, Tinnu Anand, Annu Kapoor, Alex Draper, Amrish Puri and Vineeth. Although it is originally a Malayalam film, the film was dubbed into Hindi (Saza-E-Kala Pani), Tamil (Siraichalai) and Telugu (Kaala Pani).


Thanmathra (2005), written and directed by Blessy is based on Padmarajan's short story 'Orma', which portrays the effects of Alzheimer's disease on the life of an individual and his family. The film bagged five Kerala State Film Awards for the Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay and a special mention for the debutant actor Arjun Lal.

Aaraam Thampuran (1997), written by Ranjith and directed by Shaji Kailas stars Mohanlal, Narendra Prasad, and Manju Warrier in the lead roles. The film was a huge success at the Box Office, and developed a cult following.


Bhramaram (2009) is a Malayalam thriller film of road-movie genre, written and directed by Blessy and starring Mohanlal, Suresh Menon, Murali Gopy and Bhumika Chawla. The film was a hit at the Box Office.

Mohanlal was elected as the most popular Keralite in a 2006 online poll conducted by CNN-IBN on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kerala's formation. The actor was conferred the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, for his contributions to Indian cinema by the Government of India in the year 2001.
