Mohanlal,
one
of
the
Mollywood's
biggest
superstars
recently
expressed
his
desire
to
donate
his
organs
to
the
needed.
Citing
an
example
of
a
16-year-old
school-girl
named
Swathi,
who
recovered
from
a
severe
liver
disease
only
because
her
aunt
donated
part
of
her
liver
to
save
her
niece.
Speaking
about
Swathi's
survival,
Mohanlal
said,
"The
return
to
life
of
Swathi,
the
school-girl,
should
open
up
the
awareness
of
organ
donations
in
the
state
and
I
wish
to
donate
my
organs
too."
Swathi
was
admitted
to
the
AIMS
with
liver
complication
(caused
by
a
severe
hepatitis
attack)
two
weeks
ago.
Her
mother
could
not
donate
her
liver
due
to
some
fatty
liver
problems
and
so
her
aunt
volunteered
to
donate
her
liver
to
save
her
young
neice.
According
to
existing
rules
for
organ
transplant,
only
direct
family
members
(parents,
spouse,
children
or
direct
siblings)
can
donate
organs
without
documents.
All
others
need
clearance
from
the
organ
donation
committee
headed
by
the
health
secretary.
An
emergency
meeting
was
called
by
State
Health
Minister
VS
Sivakumar,
and
the
permission
was
immediately
granted.
Mohanlal
advocating
transplants
is
a
good
sign
since
celebrities
are
often
looked
upon
with
high
regard
and
people
are
more
likely
to
follow
their
footsteps.
