Remembering Thilakan On His First Death Anniversary

Today it's been one year since the ace actor Thilakan had left us. He died on September 24, 2012, owing to cardiac arrest in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He had acted in more than 200 films and was known as the Perumthachan of the Malayalam film industry.

Thilakan started off his career as a theater artist. He began his career in cinema with a role in PJ Anthony directed Malayalam movie Periyar (1973). He then worked in Gandharvakshetram. However, he was first noticed for his role in the film Ulkadal (1979). His first role as a lead character was as Kallu Varkey, a drunkard in Kolangal (1981). Thilakan established himself as an actor after he got his first State Award in 1981 for his role in Yavanika.

Thilakan's notable films are Perumthachan, Kireedom, Sphadikam, Moonnam Pakkam, Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Mookkilla Rajyathu, Chenkol, Randam Bhavam, Kaattu Kuthira and Yavanika. He has also acted in some Tamil films too. In 2009, Thilakan was honoured with Padmashri.

Thilakan is survived by his two wives Santha and Leela and their six children. Two among them - Shammi Thilakan and Shobi Thilakan are cine artists. Thilakan died at KIMS hospital after the complications resulting from his health issues.
