Malayalam Cinema In Throes Of Crisis

By Akhila Menon

The malayalam cinema industry is back in the throes of crisis. The industry is yet to have the first hit of 2015. Approximately, 32 movies have released in Malayalam within a time span of 2 months.

Among the 32 releases movies, very few of them managed to gain the attention of audience and media. Major Ravi's Picket 43, which had Prithviraj in the lead role, and Deepu Karunakaran's Mammootty starrer Fireman were the only movies which did a decent business.

The highly anticipated releases, including Fahadh Faasil's Mariyam Mukku and Haram, Jayasurya starrer Aadu Oru Bheegara Jeeviyanu, Rajesh Pillai's Mili, which had Amala Paul in the title role etc terribly failed at box office.

2015 started with actor Shankar Panicker's directorial venture Sand City, which was a huge box office disaster. The first bunch of major projects hit the theatres on January 23rd; in which only Picket 43 managed to survive.

The first weekend of March had 5 releases and all the movies miserably failed at the box office. There won't be any major releases in the upcoming weekend. And thus, the last two weeks of March are very crucial for the Malayalam cinema industry.

Dulquer Salmaan starrer 100 Days Of Love is expected to release on March 20th. As per the reports, Nivin Pauly's Oru Vadakkan Selfie and Mohanlal-Manju Warrier starrer Ennum Eppozhum will also hit the theaters on March 27th.

In April, the industry will have some prestigious projects releasing; including Mammootty starrer Bhaskar The Rascal, Dileep's Ivan Maryada Raman, Jayaram's Sir Cp etc. Audience are eagerly waiting for the first blockbuster of the year.
