Sports based dramas have thrilling elements associated with them, which make them an interesting watch, even if they follow a same template.
Such sports based films have been rare in Malayalam films, but we do have a few films, which fall into the category of sports based films.

1983 was more than just a sports drama. In fact, this is the best Malayalam film which had sports as a central theme. The life of the protagonist and his connection with the game of cricket has been well-showcased in this movie directed by Abrid Shine.
As the name suggests, Goal, the film directed by Kamal dealt with the game of football. The story was set in the backdrop of a school. Despite having a very promising theme, the film failed to deliver the best.
Mahasamudram, was more of a superstar movie with all necessary ingredients of commercial cinema in it. But still, the film had the presence of the game of football and it played an important role in the film. Nevertheless, the film was a disappointment.
The film directed by Lal was a kind of a road movie involving four friends. At the same time, the core of the film revolved around a cricket selection tournament. More focus was given to the drama part, which might have probably left the audience disappointed.
Well, this film, which had Dileep in the lead role was set in the background of a college and an athletic meet. The film followed the templates of sports dramas, but still, the finishing moments of the film did give the audiences the necessary thrill.
But, it has to be noted that most of the Malayalam films in the above list didn't fare well at the box-office. Only 1983, which had Nivin Pauly in the lead role, went on to create a big impression as a sports based film.
In fact, new film-makers are all set to try their hands on sports based dramas, which is a genre that gives them a new area to experiment.
Karinkunnam Sixes, which has Manju Warrier in the lead role got released, recently. The film is said to be a genuine sports-based drama that revolves around the game of Volleyball. Manju Warrier appears as a Volleyball coach in the film.
The film directed by Deepu Karunakaran has a stellar cast comprising of actors like Anoop Menon, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Lena, Babu Antony, Jacob Gregory etc.
Another film in the making, which has the potential to be one of the best sports based films in Malayalam, is the upcoming film Beautiful Game, which would mark the directorial debut of Jamesh Kottakkal.
The film which would have Prithviraj in the lead role would be set in the backdrop of the game of football. Prithviraj would be seen in the role of a national level football player in the film.
