Malayalam
film
industry
is
definitely
going
through
a
changing
face.
There
are
much
welcoming
changes
in
various
aspects
of
films,
which
definitely
is
a
sign
of
a
good
way
forward.
There
has
been
a
visible
change
in
the
way
film-makers
and
writers
are
etching
out
female
characters
in
commercial
films.
Here
we
list
6
such
well-etched
female
characters
from
recent
Malayalam
films.
Tessa
In
Charlie
The
character
Tessa
in
the
film
Charlie
was
indeed
very
different
from
the
usual
female
characters
we
have
seen
in
Malayalam
films.
Tessa
has
been
etched
with
a
different
tone
that
stands
close
with
the
character
of
Charlie.
Kanchanamala
In
Moideen
Being
a
love
story,
the
success
of
the
film
definitely
depends
on
the
characterisation
of
the
male
and
female
protagonists.
The
makers
of
the
film
did
make
it
a
point
to
make
the
character
of
Kanchanamala
as
powerful
as
Moideen's.
Malar
In
Premam
Malar,
the
character
played
by
Sai
Pallavi
in
the
film,
went
on
to
in
the
hearts
of
many.
The
character
appears
only
in
one
of
the
three
stages
in
the
film,
yet
Malar
became
the
most
talked
about
character
of
the
film.
Jimcy
In
Maheshinte
Prathikaram
Jimcy
comes
in
towards
the
second
half
of
the
film,
but
the
character
has
been
well-etched
such
that
Jimcy
makes
a
lasting
impression
in
the
minds
of
the
people.
The
character
wasn't
given
any
cliched
circumstances
and
it
definitely
stood
real
and
natural.
Laya
In
Two
countries
Less
often
we
see
a
female
character
getting
equal
space
in
an
out-and-out
commercial
entertainer.
The
character
of
Laya
portrayed
by
Mamtha
Mohandas,
is
a
never
seen
before
kind
of
a
character.
More
importantly,
Laya
is
equally
important
in
the
film
just
like
the
main
protagonist
Ullas,
played
by
Dileep.
Kalyani
In
Su..Su..Sudhi
Valmeekam
The
character
played
by
Shivada
Nair
may
not
be
having
equal
screen
space
as
the
character
played
by
Jayasurya
in
the
film.
But,
the
character
Kalyani
has
been
well-etched
by
Ranjith
Sankar,
staying
away
from
cliches.
Even
the
dialogues
given
to
the
character
were
more
real
than
dramatic.
It
has
to
be
noted
that
most
of
the
films
given
in
the
above
list
fall
into
the
category
of
commercial
cinema.
It
also
has
to
be
noted
that,
none
of
the
above
films
handled
women-centric
themes.
Despite
all
these,
the
above
films
had
given
good
space
to
their
female
leads
to
perform.
More
importantly,
those
female
characters
didn't
fall
into
the
category
of
stereotyped
women
characters
and
stayed
away
from
cliches.
Films
like
Charlie,
Ennu
Ninte
Moideen,
Premam
etc.
were
pure
commercial
entertainers
and
these
films
did
have
in
them
some
big
names
of
the
industry
like
Dulquer
Salmaan,
Nivin
Pauly,
Prithviraj
etc.
Inspite
of
all
these,
the
actresses
of
the
film
went
on
to
receive
much
appreciation
for
which
due
credits
must
be
given
to
the
way
the
characters
were
etched.
Well,
we
hope
that
this
definitely
is
a
positive
sign
and
we
would
get
to
see
more
and
more
well-written
female
characters
in
commercial
films
and
thereby
giving
the
actresses
equal
space
to
perform.
